Elijah, whose name means “Yahweh is God,” comes on the scene in Israel's history to confront the rise of Baal worship. Ahab and Jezebel are in charge and are promoting Baal as a needed addition in Israel. God uses Elijah to denounce Baal and declare Yahweh as the one true God.
