As Paul continues to defend his ministry to the Thessalonians, he gives us a unique picture of the appropriate way to give and to receive the Word of God. In a day and age when relative truth has replaced the absolute truth of the Word of God, it is critically important we share the gospel of God with people. Paul is going to beautifully illustrate in this passage that it is not only important what we tell people, but how we do it.

In chapter two of 1 Thessalonians, Paul moves from evidences of the power of the gospel in the lives of the Thessalonians to a defense of his ministry among them and the characteristics of a ministry that pleases God. This passage gives us a unique look at the ministry heart of the Apostle Paul and its importance in pleasing, glorifying and honoring God.

The power of the gospel to change lives is an incredible thing to observe and experience. Paul and his ministry team were thankful to God as they saw the difference that the gospel made in the lives of the Thessalonian believers. Has the gospel made that kind of difference in your life?

After planting the church at Thessalonica, Paul was chased from the city by angry Jews who stirred up a mob against him. Concerned to see how the church was doing, Paul sent Timothy to check on the church and report back to him. Paul was filled with joy and thanksgiving at the report of the work of God at Thessalonica. What caused him to be so thankful about the Thessalonians? What can we learn from the example that they set?

1 Thessalonians was written to a group of young Christians with whom Paul had only had a limited time for discipleship. Though the church was doing well in many respects, there were issues that needed to be dealt with and serious questions that had arisen. What can we learn from this church and from Paul’s admonitions to this church in order to live our lives in such a way as to please God in light of Jesus’ return?
