The Child in the manger was announced by John the Baptist as “the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” Thus Jesus is set forth as the sacrificial Lamb. The title, “Lamb of God,” would have deeply touched John’s Jewish audience, who knew by experience the slaughtering of Lambs for the sins of the people. Their theology was informed by at least three crucial Old Testament texts which point to Jesus as the Sacrificial Lamb
