During the Medieval Period, the “rediscovered” teachings of Aristotle achieved prominence in the developing European university system. Coupled with the rise of scholasticism, a precise and rigorous method of theological study, Aristotelian philosophy was able to make its way into the study of theology in a heretofore unknown way. That manner was Thomas Aquinas’ natural theology. In this lecture, Richard Winston explores how Aquinas made room for philosophy within the study of theology and illustrates Aquinas’ natural theology by examining Aquinas’ “five ways” to prove the existence of God.
