The crisis of authority, in which rational thought was exalted above the Holy Scriptures, eventually brought about the rise of individualism, or the sovereignty of the individual. Nevertheless, the philosophy that gives sovereignty to the individual works against the maturity of the church that Paul describes in Ephesians 4. In a word, it is the "unity" of the body of Christ that signals its "maturity," a unity in doctrine and love and purpose.
