The Beatitudes were not given out by our Lord in a cafeteria format for us to pick and choose which ones ought to be applicable in our lives. It is God’s will that each of them become part of our lives to establish the kind of Christian character that results in our happiness and our readiness to be used of God for His plans and purposes in our lives. Purity is crucial in the life of a believer that wants to be used for God’s glory. The “heart” refers to the inner person, the real you. The way a person thinks will determine how he will act. The word “pure” speaks of being clean, without defilement or hypocrisy, and transparent. Other synonyms would include “unadulterated, uncontaminated, sterling, holy, righteous and unpolluted. This is the “heart” of the matter!
